More details of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light shine out

As reported yesterday, Square Enix is continuing to expand both its classic Final Fantasy releases on DS and their increasingly long names.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light follows on from the DS remakes of Final Fantasies III and IV - and comes from the same development team, including character designer Akihiko Yoshida - and is the first original Final Fantasy for DS.

More details have now emerged, with the hero, the 14-year-old Brandt called upon - on his birthday no less - to save the princess who's been abducted by the Witch of the North.

But unlike every 14-year old boy I've ever known, he doesn't say 'Stupid girl' and go back to play with Lego, PlayStation, RuneScape etc, he does the noble thing, and another Square Enix ensemble adventure begins.

System of an up

Same scenario as ever you might be thinking, but there are some new things to consider.

One is the Action Point Combat System that makes the game's turn-based combat simpler through a series of commands that enable you to unleash your most powerful attacks by saving up action points during battle.

Character classes are managed via more than 20 jobs, which have their own abilities. They're controlled by the Crown Job System, which also changes the appearance of characters as they're equipped with new weapons and armour. A character's abilities and magic skills can be customised no matter which crown they have equipped however.

All together now

In terms of modes, there are both single and multiplayer options. The single player game is based around a group of four characters - hence the game's title - while you and three other players can squad together in the multiplayer mode to play through the main adventure or bash through ad hoc dungeons.

You can find out more - and see some more of the great artwork - via the game's official website.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light is due to be released in North America on October 5. The European release hasn't yet been confirmed but is likely to be around the same time.
