Steve Jobs's iPad revolution: 'freedom from porn'

Jobs debates iPad freedom with a blogger

Steve Jobs's iPad revolution: 'freedom from porn'

These days, companies and their executives are more visible than ever - especially Apple CEO Steve Jobs. He might not be Tweeting, blogging, or updating his Facebook fan page, but the polo-necked boss of Apple is known to reply, candidly, to a select few emails.

So nowadays, instead of expressing your umbrage towards Apple through a particularly fiery blog post or a rage-filled video on YouTube, you can send your concern straight to Jobs himself, and he might even reply.

This weekend, Gawker Media blogger Ryan Tate saw the latest Apple iPad advert and disagreed with one particular phrase: "It's already a revolution." What, asked Tate, does the iPad have "the faintest thing to do with revolution", since revolutions are so heavily dripped in 'freedom'.

After summing up his displeasure in a pithy email, he sent it off to Apple headquarters. Jobs bit back, saying the iPad is totally about freedom, man - freedom from apps that yoink your private data and trash your battery, and freedom from porn. We get it Steve, you don't like porn.

The bell rings. Round two. Tate bites back with name-dropping, plenty of "trust me"s and a potty mouth that'd make Gene Hunt blush. Jobs unleashes the finishing blow: "what have you done that's so great?"

Fatality.

You can read the entire debate over at Valley Wag. Both sides make valid points: we know Jobs's approach to a closed app marketplace makes great, trouble-free programs that you can install on your iDevice without hesitation, but it does limit certain functionality.

"We're just doing what we can to try and make (and preserve) the user experience we envision," says Steve.
