Nintendo has plans to combat piracy on 3DS
Jack Sparrow running scared
Everyone knows that you can’t win a war against a noun. War on Terror? No win. War on Crime? No hope. War on Drugs? No chance.
In spite of this truism, Nintendo has revealed that its own war on piracy is being seriously ramped up.
Scheduled to coincide with the release of its next generation handheld, the 3DS (due to be unveiled at next month's E3 conference), the precise nature of Nintendo’s plans remain a secret, lest any hints could aid the would-be hackers in advance.
The Japanese giant’s beef with the illegal downloading of its software comes as little surprise in light of recently reported falling DS sales.
More than a feelingAccording to the makers of Mario Kart and Zelda, DS software has been pirated "238 million times". We haven’t seen that much looting since the Vikings landed.
“We fear a kind of thinking is becoming widespread that paying for software is meaningless,” Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata, said. “We have a strong sense of crisis about this problem.”
To this end, Nintendo has set up a dedicated site, allowing punters to report any counterfeiting of Pokémon and Metroid Prime Hunters.
