Sega cuts UK and US staff, invests in digital downloads
Will collect rings for food
Sega is reducing its western work force by about 10 per cent, Gamasutra reports, and is turning its attention to the digital marketplace.
The company will lay off 36 workers in its San Francisco office and 37 in London, and restructure the western organisation so the California hub will concentrate on Sega's digital offerings, while the British offices will focus on retail, boxed games.
Sega West president Mike Hayes tells Gamasutra, "We intend on moving into [digital] with more investment", and says that Sega will be more aggressively attacking social gaming, mobile platforms, and other digitally distributed content.
The company has already made considerable strides into this arena by heavily supporting the digital distribution services on consoles and providing many of its most successful IP, such as Football Manager, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Super Monkey Ball, on iPhone.
