Steve Jobs likes his big numbers (preferably displayed on an even bigger black screen in a distinctive font), so he was understandably delighted to kick off the 4.0 unveiling event by announcing that the iPhone had passed the 50 million unit sales mark.

Combined with an additional 35 million iPod touchs, that's 85 million iPod devices in the marketplace as of today's announcement. Even more impressive are the app download numbers, which show no sign of slowing, with a massive 185,000 apps on sale and over 4 billion apps downloaded to date.

Early iPad figures looked equally promising, with 450,000 sold in this first week (since Saturday's launch) and over 3.5 million apps downloaded already.

Naturally this was just the opening shot of the day's announcement. Read here for the full details of the 4.0 reveal in our iPhone OS 4.0 liveblog.
