Sidekick replacements rumoured

Microsoft ‘Pink’ handsets to be announced at mystery event?

Microsoft is reportedly set to introduce two new handsets at a show on April 12th. The show will be held in San Francisco and will apparently be entitled “it’s time to share”.

Code-named Pure and Turtle, both of the new phones will be sliders, featuring touchscreen and keyboard interfaces. The project has been rumoured for some time now under the name of “Pink”.

While the phones will feature Windows CE at their core, they won’t be able to run programs designed for either Windows Phone 6.5 or the forthcoming 7. Rather, it’s believed that they’ll run a dedicated operating system based on the Danger OS, which Microsoft bought just over a year ago.

The presence of Danger OS, along with the rumoured spec, would seem to support suggestions that the “Pink” handsets will be direct replacements for the troubled Sidekick handset in the US, where they’re expected to be released within a month of the Microsoft event.
