300,000 iPads sold, 1 million apps downloaded

These numbers have definitely not been padded

You might want to grab the smelling salts and sit yourself down before continuing to read this report, because it looks like the analysts have got the iPad sales figures all wrong. Shocking, I know.

Merely a day after we reported that some firms were predicting up to 700,000 iPads had been sold on launch day, Apple has released official figures putting the total number closer to 300,000 – half of those (crazy) predictions.

To be fair, to a few analysts such as Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster the initial estimates were in the correct region initially, but this number soon doubled in size by the time the device went on sale.

That’s still around $150 million in revenue for Apple on one day alone, which is certainly nothing to sniff, balk or anything else at. Yet, it may be regarded as slightly disappointing considering the iPhone managed to shift 270,000 on its first weekend almost three years ago.

Of a more encouraging note for Apple though were the level of app and E-book downloads on launch day, which totalled 1 million and 250,000 respectively within 24 hours.
