Backflip Studios is one of the most successful iPhone developers thanks to the 17 million downloads it's generated with its free Paper Toss game.

As CEO Julian Farrior explained at GDC 2010, it uses these eyeballs to either sell ads or cross promote its other games (or both). It's a model that's working really well, with revenue of around $500,000 generated in December 2009 alone.

And that's one of the reasons Backflip will be releasing another six free games over the coming months.

The first is Strike Knight; a puck bowling game that's been inspired by the arcade machines you apparently found in American bars in the late 1980s and early 90s. (I wasn't there so can't possibly comment.)

Like Paper Toss, it's simple to play but has great graphics, and the Strike Knight will taut you in his menacing electro-tones when you lose.

It also includes a hotseat multiplayer option for up to four players.

You can see how it plays in the following video.
