geoDefense 2 will launch on both iPhone and iPad before the end of 2010, developer David Whatley confirmed with us today at GDC.

Speaking with me about his plans to extend the franchise, Whatley revealed plans to build two versions of the direct sequel.

"I'm going to do a version for iPhone and a separate one for iPad," he explained. "The iPad version will have completely different levels."

Whatley told me that the larger iPad screen presents an opportunity to design unique levels not possible in the iPhone version of the game. "It may even have a different name, like geoDefense HD."

His enthusiasm was clear - he sees the iPad version of geoDefense 2 taking tower defense games to the next level.

While he wouldn't share specific details regarding game modes and new features, he confessed a desire to try new things without abandoning the core elements that made the original (pictured above) so popular.

geoDefense 2 will be available before the end of the year for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
