As one of the smartphone world’s leading lights, HTC was expected to make a significant splash at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and we’re pleased to report the firm hasn’t disappointed.

Although its existence has been known for quite some time now, the official announcement of the HTC Desire remains a tantalising prospect: packing a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and backed by 512MB of ROM and 576MB of RAM, this device clearly has the raw power to go toe-to-toe with its much-hyped stable mate the Nexus One.

In addition to this, the Android 2.1 phone will also boast a 5 megapixel camera, GPS and wi-fi. To round it all off, the Desire has a mouth-watering AMOLED 3.7 inch screen running at an impressive 480x800 pixel resolution.

And for those of you with iPhone-envy, you’ll be pleased to know that it also supports multi-touch.

Damien's mum hoped he would grow out of playing silly video games and gain respectable employment. Perhaps become a teacher or a scientist, that kind of thing. Needless to say she now weeps openly whenever anyone asks how her son's getting on these days.
