Tactical tower defence takes root on the App Store

Plants vs. Zombies in full bloom on iPhone

After spending months germinating, Plants vs. Zombies is now live on the App Store.

From accomplished development studio PopCap Games, the tactical tower defence game pits you against a zombie horde that can only be beaten back using botany.

Yes, plants.

Tree-huggers will find themselves at a distinct advantage here, as 49 botanical varieties are at your disposal across a lengthy 50-level Adventure mode that spans both day and night, front yard and back yard.

The zombies come in just as many types too: football players, doctors, Zamboni operators, and even dolphin-riding swimmers.

Of course, the PC original has to be pruned to work on iPhone and iPod touch. Several modes of play have been clipped, while the interface and controls have been overhauled.

Plants vs. Zombies is available now for iPhone and iPod touch at a price of £1.79/$2.99.
