One of your friends is in love with a girl who shows very little interest in him. He dresses and acts in ways that he thinks will impress her, but to no avail. And then, disaster: she starts going out with somebody else.

Inexplicably, your friend is cheered by this unfortunate development. “It's okay,” he says. “Going out with him will make her fall for me.” You beseech your friend, with tears in your eyes, to remove his head from his rectum.

Meanwhile, Sony's John Koller has responded in the Wall Street Journal to Apple's iPad announcement by claiming an unlikely victory. "Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony,” he says, “When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP."

Comparing Sony to a delusional spurned admirer is probably taking things a bit too far, but it's difficult to see Koller's line of reasoning. Presumably, the supposed trajectory of consumers' thoughts is something like, “Wow, this iPod touch is great, and this iPad is even better. I think I'll buy a PSP.”

I'm no businessman, but surely the more realistic trajectory leads to the consumer being very happy with his handheld device and not buying another one.
