Apple launches iBook Kindle killer for iPad

In a move that will no doubt cause disquiet at Amazon HQ, Steve Jobs has announced during today's much anticipated Apple event that it's to launch its own e-book reader, called the iBook Store. iPad owners will be able to download books and read them on the iPad's 9.7-inch screen.

Ever the gentleman, Jobs acknowledged Amazon's influence. “Now Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this... we're going to stand on their shoulders for this.”

Of course, to have somebody stand on your shoulders is never pleasant, and may lead in extreme cases to paralysis.

HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Hachette Book Group are all signed up, with more sure to follow.
