It's what we've all been waiting to hear: not only will games be playable on the Apple iPad, but you'll be able to sync your entire iPhone or iPod touch game collection straight from iTunes, or redownload them. To all intents and purposes the iPad is a large iPod touch.

Of course, this carries the danger of making games look awful. Graphics designed to appear on a small screen could look jagged on a big one. To avoid this, Apple has included pixel-doubling, which doubles the number of pixels on screen with the result that edges look smoother.

Apple's Scott Forstall demonstrated two distinct ways of running apps, either in a centralised window (imagine an iPhone with a massive frame or just look below - images courtesy of Engadget).

or full-screen which can be achieved by doubling up the pixels as below.

However, Forstall also went on to state that updated iPad specific games and apps would also be created to take advantage of the advanced capabilities of the device.

At this stage, the precise nature of these enhancements and precisely how they will be differentiated and marketed in the app store remains to be clarified.
