In an unusually quiet announcement posted to the company's Facebook page, Square Enix has revealed remakes of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II for iPhone and iPod touch.

The terse announcement reads, "Over 20 years since the original releases, FINAL FANTASY and FINAL FANTASY II are coming to iPhone / iPod touch!"

As you can see, not much in the way of details.

We hope the games are based on the versions used in the excellent Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls compilation released for Game Boy Advance which included new quests and gameplay enhancements that made it much nicer to play.

What is clear from the screenshots released are changes being made to accommodate the touchscreen. A virtual directional pad appears on the world map in one screen for Final Fantasy.

In battle shots for both games, the text-based combat menus have been replaced by icons that are more readily identified and manipulated.

It also appears some serious optimisation has been done to the visuals.

Square Enix hasn't announced pricing or a release date, only pledging more information soon.
