Developer Manomio battled hard to get C64 onto iPhone, with more than its share of difficulties when it came to emulating the classic 8-bit beige beast.

But version 1.2 finally delivered the retro gaming system aging iPhoners were looking for, with an in-app purchase system to delivering new old games.

Manomio has just dropped us a line to announce that version 1.4 has now been submitted to Apple, unofficially pegged as the World Championship Edition of C64.

The bulk of the update is OpenFeint social gaming integration, which will deliver a retro gaming community, achievements and leaderboards to a select number of C64's games.

"Many of us remember playing C64 games, vying for the high score and undoubtedly reveling with our friends when we grabbed the top score in Uridium, Paradroid or whatever happened to be hot at the time," explains Manomio's Stuart Carnie.

"Perhaps you were the best at your school, club or even town....but, are you the best in the world? Now's your chance with Open Feint integration for select games."

On top of OpenFeint, C64 World Championship Edition boasts some background code improvement for the iPhone 3GS and third generation iPod touch, which allows the games to run at a "buttery smooth 50fps". Nice.

The first round of available achievements for C64 on iPhone are below, while the forthcoming 1.5 update promises similar social gaming action for more emulated Commodore classics.

Spanner Spencer
Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
