Unless you've been living under a rock in Papua New Guinea you'll know that all the buzz this month is around the almost legendary Apple iSlate and its Microsoft equivalent, dubbed the Courier.

The good news is that last night Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer came through on the speculation and revealed Microsoft's tablet device during his evening keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas ahead of Apple's expected unveiling later this month.

The bad news is that Ballmer failed to disclose any specific details such as its price, specs, or even a name.

What Ballmer presented briefly on stage was merely a prototype of an HP device running Kindle for Windows and functioning more or less like an e-reader.

What we can confirm is that it exists, will run Windows 7, and that Microsoft are making more than one of them with several different partners including Pegatron, Archos and HP collectively dubbed "slate PCs".

With other companies rumoured to be announcing their own attempts at tablets at the CES later this week, don't expect the buzz surrounding these mythical products to die down anytime soon.

Let the speculation continue.
