Self promotion is something all iPhone developers should be considering in 2010, and US studio ZWorkbench has started the new year with an interesting take on the situation.

It released its free crossword-Scrabble game Lexitect in December and is now encouraging people to play with a monthly high score competition.

Simply put the person who has the highest score come midnight January 31 will win a gold trophy with their name engraved on it.

At time of writing, Bridget is in an early lead with 705 points, but we suspect the final total will be in the thousands.

Of course, other companies have tried similar moves with mobile marketing outfit, Upstream's Brawn GP Racing competition to win a Mercedes SL Roadster being the most prominent during 2009.

The lucky winner of the SL30 (list price £68,000) was one Baljit Kalsi from the UK.

Still, ZWorkbench's approach demonstrates developers don't need to break the bank to encourage a bit of competition.

Lexitect is free. Hit the App Store button to get it.
