Big news out of Japan on the first day of the new year: Hironobu Sakaguchi, famed creator of the Final Fantasy franchise, is working on an iPhone game.

Offering best wishes for the new year on the Mistwalker company blog, Sakaguchi nonchalantly states that he's in the midst of developing a game for iPhone and iPod touch.

"Oh, by the way, we are also working on a project for iPhone."

He makes it sound as if developing an iPhone game is an amusement, something to pass the time between the genre-defining epics he's known for producing.

Truth be told, one of the world's foremost developers of role-playing games announcing an iPhone project is no small matter.

We can't be sure the new game is an RPG, but we'd be surprised if it wasn't. After all, they are Sakaguchi's specialty and there's definitely space for a blockbuster Japanese RPG on the App Store.

Before we get too excited about the prospect of an original, exclusive iPhone RPG, it's worth raising the suggestion that Mistwalker might be porting over either Blue Dragon Plus or Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow (only available in Japan) from DS.

Even if that's the case, it's hard to understate the significance of Sakaguchi's interest in developing for iPhone.
