Indie game guru Jeff Minter working on 'scrolly shooter' Attack of the Mutant Oxen for iPhone

Indie game development hasn't been as prevalent as it is now on iPhone since the 8-bit days, when gurus like Jeff Minter were putting together games on their home computers and sharing them with the rest of the digital immigrants who had discovered the new world of homebrew code.

TouchArcade noticed that Minter (also known as Yak, to the Commodore retro gamers) has turned his woolly attention on iPhone, and is currently putting together his own game engine so Llamasoft can dive right back into the self-published, independent game design world, where it belongs.

"I must admit I am rather enjoying coding the iPhone and it’s been quite quick to come up to speed on, despite the fact that I am not at all experienced with OOP and so found Objective-C a little brain bending at first," Minter explains on his blog.

His task at the moment is in putting together an engine that will allow him to create a host of different games quickly and easily, and videos are gradually emerging from the llama pen of a "scrolly shooter" called Attack of the Mutant Oxen.

Judging by the regular videos The Yak has been putting out, the game (and its engine) is coming along nicely, and with any luck Llamasoft will soon be a regular name on iPhone exactly as it was on the Commodore VIC-20.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
