First video footage of Google's Nexus One phone

Bit of a shaky hand cam recording, but at least it's real

The good thing about Google is that it's nowhere near as paranoid about telling people what's going on within the company as Apple or Sony (for example). So once news filtered out that it was planning to release its own smartphone hardware, Google seems to have been pretty relaxed about letting the Nexus One roam in the wild.

A shaky cam video of the device recently appeared on the web, and although it keeps popping up and being taken down - and doesn't really show a great deal - it's still interesting to see that the device is real.

The loading screen is pretty flash, too, with the Nexus One 'X' pattern swirling around before we see a boot screen showing the device is running the latest Android 2.1 operating system.

Rumours are abound that Google's acquisition of mobile advertising giant AdMob is linked to the Nexus One phone, with the potential for on-device advertising absorbing much of the handset's cost - allowing consumers to buy a Google Nexus One SIM free, but at the kind of handset price you'd normally only see with a contract attached.

Anyway, here's the video and, as always, we welcome your initial impressions.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
