Pac-Man Championship Edition out now on iPhone

The dot muncher back to reclaim his retro throne

Pac-Man Championship Edition out now on iPhone

We've seen some awesome retro conversions lately, with devs really making an effort to refresh a franchise and not just provide iPhone gamers with rough, raw emulations.

Next up is Pac-Man Championship Edition, which we first reported on back in August. The game has appeared on Xbox Live and on mobile, receiving critical acclaim in both instances.

"To say this is a definitive version of Pac-Man is quite a claim, given the number of times he's been trawled out of the gaming cupboard, but that's precisely what it is," reads our review of the mobile version.

While at its core this is still very much the same as the original Pac-Man from 1980 (not some gaudy, 3D bastardisation of the franchise) the mechanics of dot munching in the mazes has been thoroughly updated.

The mazes now shift as you play, while the dots are only revealed at certain intervals and in different parts of the maze as you progress. Oh, and the whole thing is time based. They're small but vital changes in the action, so let's hope the concept has survived the move to touchscreen controls.

Namco assures us the game has been properly redesigned to fit the iPhone with dual touchscreen controls, and Pac-Man Championship Edition is avaiable now on a limited time offer of £1.79. Hit the App Store button to jump into the maze and get munching.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
