Another advent bargain

PlayStation-era platformer Pandemonium 99c/59p on the App Store all day

After reading that Pandemonium is the latest game to peggle down to 59p as part of EA’s 25 Games ‘Til Xmas promotion on Twitter, I’ve spend the last ten minutes or so following various investigative leads. Here are the fruits of my research.

It would be untrue to say that nobody was aware of Pandemonium on iPhone, but it’s had relatively little coverage. Not only that, but I missed the game when it was released in 1996 for the PlayStation (thanks Wikipedia).

It has been released to middling acclaim on N-Gage, and a mobile version was announced a couple of years ago, but there are no stories about the iPhone version on Pocket Gamer. The first mention we gave it was during the recent Black Friday sales, when EA reduced its price to $1.99/£1/19.

This may be because, in the words of a suspiciously knowledgeable user review on the App Store description page, “It was released back in May, but due to some licensing issues it wasn’t available until now.”

Other reviews indicate that the iPhone version of Pandemonium is faithful to the original PlayStation game aside from the map screen, which is absent, and the music, which is watered down. The overall score is 4.5 stars from 20 reviews.

Intrigued, I downloaded it and had a little play. It’s a 2.5D platformer which you control with an onscreen D-pad. It seems quite good, and it’s 99c/59p all day today.
