Laserdisc classic Dragon's Lair now on iPhone

More pre-animated iPhone action arrives at the App Store

Laserdisc classic Dragon's Lair now on iPhone

If there's one thing those classic laserdisc arcade games have in common, it's that they're incredibly difficult. Cobra Command was just released for the App Store, and now one of the first examples of a pre-animated interactive film, Dragon's Lair, has arrived on the iPhone (put together by Digital Leisure but delivered by EA, no less).

Dragon's Lair was created by ex-Disney animator Don Bluth, and although it was difficult and stilted - forcing you to make joystick and button gestures at just the right moment in a series of video clips - it was a huge success thanks to the quality of the full-motion video and swashbuckling storyline.

The iPhone version makes an effort to alleviate some of the Dragon's Lair control difficulties with a variety of options. You can increase the number of available lives (to infinite, if you want to watch the whole movie), or you can switch on a system that highlights which move you'll need to make next.

This might sound like a bit of a cheat, but essentially it turns Dragon's Lair into a game controlled entirely by quick-time events, which pours some sugar on the bitter taste of cheating.

Dragon's Lair is out now on the iPhone at £2.99, (alongside Space Ace, though EA wasn't involved in that one), so hit the App Store button below to go on a damsel-saving mission with the famous Dirk the Daring.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
