Man marries character in DS game

A Japanese gamer has married his girlfriend Nene Anegasaki during a ceremony at a technology festival in Tokyo. Though conventional in many respects, the event was in some ways marked by the striking non-existence of the bride.

It’s difficult to know how serious the groom Sal9000 was being, but in the interests of laughing at others we’ll assume the wedding was sincere.

The bride is a character in the dating game Love Plus, which invites players to develop a romantic relationship with one of three virtual women. It’s not known whether Sal9000 had enjoyed dalliances with the other two characters, but his promiscuous history with virtual ladies has been documented.

A BoingBoing video report claims, “He had a laundry list of video game girlfriends before her, but now he’s a devoted partner who’d do anything to make his girl happy.”

Although a priest was in attendance at the ceremony, this wedding is not legally binding in the way that, for example, weddings between humans are, but there are reports that Sal9000 had already eloped with a fully charged Nene to Guam, where the marriage laws are more permissive.
