The App Stork: Introducing Cabby, Big Brain on Fire, Bear Paw and...
|

It’s definitely been a quieter week in the iPhone and iPod touch developer news forum than we’ve had in a while - perhaps because many iPhone game developers out there are currently more concerned with thanks giving turkeys than they are with App Storks.

But that doesn’t mean the quality bar is any lower. The top three recommendations here all deserve a go, and what better time to take advantage of some extra gaming than during the holidays (unless of course, you're not from the US, in which case you’re still a good month away from an excuse to game your thumbs down to the bone).

Remember, this feature is about two things. Firstly, it’s about developers peddling their wares as shamelessly as they like. And secondly, it’s about gamers finding out about the very deserving App Store titles that, sadly, we don’t have time to cover elsewhere.

This is a conversation, not a monologue, so get in the forum and make your opinions about the games you’ve played known. You never know - it could be your genius suggestions that help give a title a major lift, post-update. And now, for this week’s feast...

Cabby - Hidden Games Though we’ve experienced some terrifying journeys at the hands of lunatic taxi drivers, we’re yet to see a cab driver make his vehicle fly. Cabby takes to the skies for some futuristic fare dropping, where the aim is to pick up customers and drop them off at their numbered destinations as quickly as possible.

If the 2D gameplay is up to the standard of the charming 3D visuals, then Hidden Games could be onto a winner with this one. The game includes ten different taxis (including one that bears a more than passing resemblance to the A-Team van) as well as fifteen levels.

It’s only 59p, too, which is roughly one hundredth of the price of the shortest possible taxi journey in the UK. Hail it now.

Big Brain of Fire
- Arroyo Games

Big Brain of Fire has less to do with the brain training genre than its title suggests. Instead, it takes what developer Arroyo Games claims is a more cerebral approach to the rhythm action genre.

There are three instruments to make noise with: drums, guitar and vocals. The video below demonstrates that, in the right hands, Big Brain of Fire has the capacity to make a righteous rock 'n’ roll racket. There are two modes, Tour and Jam Session, to enjoy, which hopefully justify the £1.79 price tag.

Be sure to let us know how you get on if you do decide to hit the gig circuit with this one.

Bear Paw
- Pocket Fun

Bear Paw is all about lots and lots of audio visual feedback. The gameplay is pitched as a sort of pinball in space affair, where the aim is to use your ricocheting space ship to collect comets while simultaneously avoiding stars.

It’s big on attention-grabbing flashing lights, which burst and fizzle all over the screen at the slightest provocation. Could be one for high-score junkies, given that scoring multipliers makes up a large part of the challenge.

The inclusion of OpenFeint support will surely help competitive players secure themselves a fresh gaming addiction. Bear Paw costs £1.19 and is out now.
