Epic sandbox RPGs, infinitely realistic simulators and vertiginous-depth strategy games just can't compete with a classic, scrolling beat-'em-up when it comes to raw gaming heroin, and Zombieville USA creator Mika Mobile has been preparing a particularly alluring syringe-full of fighting awesomeness called OMG Pirates!

The game is a spiritual successor to the immensely popular Zombieville USA, though largely from a programming and artistic point of view. For the gameplay it's more akin to The Behemoth's excellent XBLA brawler Castle Crashers, with some dazzling animation providing tonnes of character for the classical beat-'em-up action.

You assume the role of a very capable ninja as he takes on a band of merciless pirates. The controls look simple enough, with an 'attack' button and a 'defence' button (which doubles as a 'jump' button when running), with different fighting moves activated depending on timing and position.

OMG Pirates! is going into Apple's review process this weekend, and currently has a £1.19/$1.99 price tag attached, which sounds like a real bargain to me. Check out the excellent gameplay video below and let us hear your thoughts.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
