id Software to follow Doom Classic with Quake Classic on iPhone

It’s been a busy week for id Software in the blogosphere. First, Doom Classic hit the App Store in time for Halloween and received some positive reviews. Then, John Carmack revealed in the game’s release notes that he hopes to bring Rage to iPhone.

And now, in an interview with Touch Arcade, he’s revealed that Quake Classic is likely to be id Software’s next iPhone game.

First released in 1996, Quake was a decent first-person successor to Doom that was instrumental in awakening huge numbers of people - let's face it, primarily single male university students studying for science degrees - to the joys of fragging, rocket jumping, being l33t, and schooling n00bs.

It’s not due out for a few months, and will be followed by Quake II - in which the single-player campaign was a largely forgettable footnote to the multiplayer experience - and then Quake III, which was multiplayer-only.

Although ngmoco and others have tested this ground with games like Eliminate on iPhone, it’ll be very interesting to see how id Software’s seminal title fares in the translation from PC to iPhone.

Carmack also confirms earlier suggestions that id Software is working on a game developed from the ground up for iPhone - a racing/action game based on the forthcoming console title Rage.
