Sony Ericsson has officially unveiled its flagship telecommunications device for 2010 - although it’s hardly going to come as a massive shock to net-savvy consumers as the phone in question has racked up quite a bit of interest over the past few months.

Previously known as “Rachael”, the XPERIA X10 (the successor to the X1 and X2 - what happened to the other eight, we wonder?) is an Android-powered smartphone which boasts a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 CPU, 8.1 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, wi-fi and a whole host of other awesome features.

Possibly the most interesting aspect of the entire device is the unique UX interface, which showcases Timescape and Mediascape, two apps that Sony Ericsson promises will allow users to effortlessly manage their social networking activities and be in complete control of all relevant media on both their phone and the internet (we assume the latter will involve services such as YouTube and Flickr).

It’s also interesting to note that Sony Ericsson is downplaying the fact that the X10 runs on the Android platform, preferring to state that the device is based on an “OpenOS”.

This is partly true, because as well as allowing users to purchase apps via the Android Market the X10 will also feature connectivity to the company’s unique PlayNow portal, like so many SE handsets before it.

The phone’s operating system is also a world apart from the standard Android 1.6 OS, and even puts the revolutionary Sense UI of the HTC Hero in the shade.

Sony Ericsson’s president Bert Nordberg is clearly quite excited by the entire thing, and had this to say: “The XPERIA™ X10 and the family of phones launching in the first half of 2010 underpin our commitment to an open and multi-platform strategy that maximises choice for the consumer and delivers the best possible consumer experience.”

The promotion video below shows what kind of fun you’ll be able to have with this potential iPhone-killer (I wish we got paid for every time we used that expression) when it eventually hits the market at the beginning of next year.

In the meantime, you may commence your salivating now.
