It’s been predicted that Google’s Android OS will be the main threat to the iPhone for some time now, but the lack of a killer handset to run the system has thus far frustrated such predictions.

Now some very tasty units are starting to crop up, not least of which is the Motorola Droid. Boy Genius has posted its findings following some hands on time with the device, and it’s looking like a genuine contender.

It appears to be a well built handset with a huge capacitative touchscreen and a full slide-out Qwerty keyboard. Despite this, though, it’s only a little thicker than an iPhone 3GS.

The Droid runs Android 2.0 (we’re currently on version 1.6) and it runs it fast, thanks to the powerful TI OMAP3430 processor at its core. This is the same processor used by the ultra-capable Palm Pre, released in the UK on Friday.

Motorola’s latest will also ship with a desktop cradle that not only charges the device but turns it into a multimedia station with local weather, time and other features.

The rumour is that Google has been directly involved with development of the Droid which, if true, suggests that this is their unofficial champion for the next generation of Android.
