New spin on sports

Backbreaker Football touches down on App Store

Despite the choice of sports, I'm really interested to see how Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley performs on the App Store.

It's not really about American Football, you see.

Instead, you have to guide your players through increasing numbers of opponents to get into the end zone. Each wave adds another tackler, so you have to get good at dodging and side-stepping, as well as accelerating, at just the right time. These actions are triggered by touchscreen buttons.

You can also gain extra points by showboating, but as this slows you down, it increases the risk of getting sacked.

The other significant thing about the game is its level of graphics and animation. Partly this is because the camera angle is automatically controlled, and there are never too many characters in view at any one time, keeping the frame rate high.

The game has also been developed by two smart companies: UK developer Ideaworks3D and animation middleware provider NaturalMotion.

You can read our interview about the making of the game here.

Or check out what it looks like in the following video:

Still, perhaps what's most surprising about the game is its price.

Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley is out now priced 99c, €0.79 or 59p. Hit the Buy It! button to go direct to the App Store endzone.
