TGS 09: Square Enix continues iPhone march with Hills and Rivers Remain

Square Enix is pouring a lot of its attention on the iPhone at this year's Tokyo Game Show, having already announced that an iPhone/iPod touch adaptation of its hit music/strategy game Song Summoner is on its way.

It also took the opportunity to announce an iPhone conversion of its mobile strategy RPG, Hills and Rivers Remain. This light RTS game blends together several different genres, including strategy, tower defence and a bit of role-playing (the Japanese demand most games have some kind of RPG content, after all).

This simplified RTS mechanic worked a treat on the mobile, and Japanese iPhone website App Bank was on hand to take a look at Hills and Rivers Remain in action.

As always, Square Enix has evidently rebuilt the game from the ground up to accommodate the Apple handheld, and looks to be a top notch adaptation that should certainly do the iPhone justice. Check it out:

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
