Just two weeks before the launch of PSPgo and we're still learning new things about the portable including this welcome surprise: save state.

What's that, you ask? It's a feature that enables you to exit a game at any point - during a fight, a race, a cutscene, whatever - and return to it later.

Unlike a regular save, however, you're able to do this at any time during play; in other words, you don't have to reach a save point.

It functions similarly to the iSave feature used in iPhone published by ngmoco that lets you resume gameplay after having taken a call, respond to a text message, or accidentally hit the home button.

Save state on PSPgo works by pressing the PlayStation button on the handheld to bring up a "Pause Game" option. Once selected, you're dropped back to the cross media bar. Scrolling through the games tab prompts a "Resume Game" that you can select when you're ready to get back into the game.

GameSpot UK broke the story, demonstrating the feature while playing MotorStorm: Arctic Edge. It's not clear if the save state data is retained in the event you power off your PSPgo.

Since the feature works independently of hardware, there's a possibility save state could make its way to older PSP models in a firmware update.

PSPgo launches in the UK and US Tuesday, October 1.
