The developer behind an expansive new iPhone MMORPG has dropped us a line with some videos to show off its open-ended, sandbox fantasy epic.

Bedlam features one major home city, in which your quest begins as a lowly mortal. You can choose from four primary classes, or from another 12 specialised character archetypes, such as thieves, warriors, clerics, assassins, necromancers and other fantastical types you tend to find hanging around in virtual dungeons.

As a mortal you're able to group together with other players to take down the more aggressive creatures, and to share experience points and gold.

All the happy questing has a purpose, however. You can aspire to level up and become an immortal, allowing you to take on a more active role in the game world, like becoming an arbiter, quest master or builder.

Fancy a bit of techie stuff on how Bedlam will work as an iPhone MMORPG? Here's what chief designer Plamen Arnaudov has to say on the subject:

"Bedlam is an advanced graphic client connecting to a heavily customized CircleMUD server. The server is and will always be free to play," Arnaudov explains. "The Bedlam world is huge, over 15,000 'screens'. All credit for building this world goes to the zone builders/players of the late 90's who contributed ideas and time to make their favorite game ever better. Many of the zones will be familiar to those who have played the text-based MUDs "Another World", "Alliances", and "Narayan".

"By developing this iPhone client, we are hoping to revive the spirit of the text-based Multi-User Dungeon and usher it into the graphical era as well as the era of super-mobile computing."

On top of all this, Bedlam still has a few places left on its beta testing phase, so if you fancy getting involved stop by the official blog and sign up.

In the meantime, here's a couple of gameplay videos to show you what Bedlam is all about.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
