SNES and Neo Geo bubble-popping classic Magical Drop comes to iPhone
First in a series of Data East conversions
Being well and truly stuck in, I was suitably excited when Taito (one of my all-time favourite arcade developers) announced it was bringing Puzzle Bobble to the App Store.
And now it seems Data East (another top coin-op king) is following Taito's lead, having just released its 1995 SNES, Neo Geo (and pretty much every other Japanese home gaming system) bubble popping beauty Magical Drop to the iPhone.
"We are carefully taking the appropriate steps to mark our place in the open mobile platform, and what better title than Magical Drop," says Apple Games Manager for G-mode Kiyotaka Takagi. "This newly developed Magical Drop that's designed specifically for the touchscreen will bring back good memories of the hectic, fun, adrenaline rush feel that Magical Drop had during its run in the 90's."
What's especially exciting about this announcement is that it marks the beginning of G-Mode's quest to bring a series of Data East intellectual properties to the iPhone.
During the Silver age of the arcades, Data East put out some spectacular coin-op classics, ranging from two of the first ever fighting games Kung Fu Master and Karate Champ, cult platform classics Karnov and Midnight Resistance, and awesome beat-'em-ups Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja, Vigilante (a superb remake of Kung Fu Master) and Two Crude Dudes.
We'll try and find out what's coming next, and let you know. If you have any requests, bung 'em in the comments section below. In the meantime, hit the 'Buy It!' button to go and check out Magical Drop Touch.
