We're really excited about Sony's new range of PSP Minis, which are poised to give the handheld console a whole new lease of life that fits perfectly into the burgeoning trend for ultra-affordable digital downloads.

Despite this, it's always distasteful to see one company attempting to grab a handful of political flesh by deriding its competition and offering little evidence that it's doing anything to the contrary.

Speaking to Develop, Sonays Zeno Colaco put down Apple, saying, "Unlike with the App Store, we’re looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness."

While his comments will resound with a number of frustrated iPhone developers, he does nothing to endear Sony or its new Minis platform to developers or, indeed, gamers when he suggests the App Store is the realm of amateurs.

"I’m not suggesting that iPhone developers are unprofessional, but," (never a good word to say immediately after a potentially insulting statement), "I think that the App Store has attracted a number of hobbyists. Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming."

It's hardly a shock-horror moment to hear Sony say that the PSP is better than the iPhone, but ultimately it's very encouraging to hear Colaco admit that PSP Minis are competing in the same space as the iPhone and its App Store.

The iPhone needs some stiff competition, and the message here seems to be that the PSP will soon be dusted off and positioned to offer pocket gamers extra digital download choice.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
