Avast! There be puzzles here!

Cannons opens fire off the iPhone bow

Generally pirates are only welcome in games at the moment if they're going up against some other famous warlike tribe (ninjas, aliens or Greenpeace volunteers - that sort of thing).

But developer Readdle has decided to give those nautical naughties something of a puzzle twist, in what must be the most unique take on the PipeMania concept that we've seen in a long time.

Your ship's cannons line one side of the screen, with a jumble of fuse wire between the lit match and the weapon. Your task is to rotate the sections of fuse wire to create a path for the flame to reach as many cannons as possible, at which point further sections of fuse drop in from the top of the screen, Bejeweled style.

With some top-notch artwork, four different pirate captains and three gameplay modes, Cannons looks perfect for all the swashbuckling puzzle fans sailing the iPhone seas, looking for some cerebral loot to plunder.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
