For those who've missed out on this spectacular homebrew production, Streets of Rage Remake is a project put together by Spanish crew Bombergames, led by Eduard Bolaño (better known on the homebrew scene as Bomberlink).

SoRR is a massive undertaking, which blends together all the gameplay and levels of the Streets of Rage trilogy into an epic beat-'em-up, and reintroduces a lot of characters (such as a built-from-scratch playable Adam Hunter character, and the flamboyant Ash, who was dropped from the western versions due to his 'Village People' styling) along with brand new levels (like a motorbike race and jet ski level).

GamePark Holdings is clearly just as enamoured with the huge amounts of first class work Bolaño and his team has done on SoRR, as it sent them a free GP2X Wiz unit to encourage the team to port the game over.

SoRR is currently receiving a massive, and highly anticipated, update to version 5, and thanks to GamePark Holdings donating a Wiz, the epic brawler will be made available on the handheld system.

"First of all I want to thank GamePark Holdings for sending me a console to make this happen," says Bomberlink on the Streets of Rage Remake developers blog. "Although the game already works, the port will have the [two player] code erased and the rest optimised to work at full 60fps, use of the touch screen for the palette editor et al."

There's also been a lot of requests for a PSP port, and while the team hasn't said 'no', it's remaining firmly on the fence given the expected difficulties of adapting the Fenix code to Sony's handheld. By all accounts, if there is a PSP port it'll only work on the 3000 Slim with its extra speed and memory (and therefore the PSPgo, presumably), but since no one in the team actually owns a PSP the process is proving difficult.

Perhaps Sony would be good enough to follow GamePark Holdings's lead and donate a PSPgo to the cause? It'd certainly help convince more than a few people to pick up the console if they could play this free mega-brawler on it.

Yeah, that's kind of a long shot. Still, great news for GP2X Wiz owners. I'm tempted to pick one up for this game alone, although I'm particularly looking forward to the promised Xbox port, too.

Head on over to the blog and forums to find out more about the awesome Streets of Rage Remake.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
