Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes coming in spring 2010

HeartGold and SoulSilver to hit DS early next year

Pokemon Gold and Silver remakes coming in spring 2010

Nintendo announced remakes of two instalments of the massively popular Pokemon series late today. Pokemon Gold and Silver will see re-release as Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver on DS in spring 2010.

Both versions return to the Johto region first visited in Pokemon Gold and Silver on Game Boy Color nearly ten years ago.

While HeartGold and SoulSilver intend to faithfully port over the gameplay of the original releases, overhauled graphics and sounds, as well as new touch screen controls.

No word on whether the remakes will introduce new content, particularly in the form of new collectible creatures. Given that Nintendo is billing the games as remakes, however, it seems unlikely.

Nintendo also promises "a host of surprises." The games will be playable on DSi, which could point to support for the handheld's cameras. There's also the possibility for Nintendo WiFi Connection features, which were recently included in Pokemon Platinum.

HeartGold and SoulSilver will become the 11th and 12th games in the franchise to see release on DS when they ship next year.
