Good news if you've had more than enough of the tower defence genre. Tower defence hybridisation is continuing apace.

This may not sound like great news, but we're intrigued by DigiDock's Gang Street War, which has just gone live on the App Store.

Set within a mob-style New York environment, it brings real-time strategy elements to the traditional 2D side-scrolling tower defence game as you have to build up your gang and territory, in order to generate more units, and hence take over more territory.

The action part of gameplay is automatic so you build up your army and place your troops in order and they march onwards until they clash with the opposition.

They then both duke it out to see who wins. If you do, your advance continues until you reach the next set of enemies and finally take over that piece of territory.

There are various different units to create, ranging from the fast-to-make but weak Mac, to the well-balanced Frankie, the long-range Noodles, and the exploding Debora. Their weapons include pistols, machine guns and dynamite.

The developer, Japanese-based studio, DigiDock reckons the strong points of the game are its 'comfortable rush' mechanic, which is combined with fluid, pick up and drop unit control, and great audio in terms of the heat of battle gun noises, and the hip-hop soundtrack.

Gang Street Wars is available now, with a launch price of $1.99 or £1.79, although the full price is supposed to be $3.99 or £2.39.
