DS gets a version of combat flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik
Touch to the skies
Renowned as one of the best PC combat flight sims, it's no surprise IL-2 Sturmovik is coming to home consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That it's being developed for DS is more of mystery. We can only assume the low cost of development in Eastern Europe makes the numbers stack up.
Nevertheless, it seems as if DiP Interactive, the studio behind the game, is doing its best to squeeze as much 3D performance out of Nintendo's dual screen wonder as possible with a dedicated version of the game which sees you flying and fighting your way through six WWII campaigns.
These are the Battle of Britain, Kursk, Sicily, the Battle of the Bulge, the Korsun-Cherkassy Pocket and the Battle for Berlin.
They will be played out through 42 missions that enable you to get your hands on 25 planes, ranging from fighters to heavy bombers. Apparently the scale of the maps will be a massive 100 x 100 km.
In terms of the controls, the lower screen is used for your flight instrumentation, and you'll be able to make hand drawn notes to record key information such as enemy positions and bombing coordinates to use in battle.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is due for release on DS, PSP and various consoles during the autumn.
