Success begets success but when it comes to the route management games kickstarted by the million selling Flight Control, maybe it's about time people came up with some new ideas for success.

Okay so Harbor Master, Trains and Gridlocked etc expanded the concept into other directions, but if we consider these second generation photocopies, the likes of Shipwreck and now Sea Captain are getting very faint.

They look like nicely put together games, and no doubt they modify the basic gameplay somewhat but surely that creativity could be put to use in a more original manner.

Significantly though producer Jeremy Pope justifies the game thus:

"Sea Captain is part of the new line drawing genre of iPhone games, pioneered by titles such as Flight Control. These titles have taken off because they are fresh and addictive, but our goal was to evolve this style of gameplay to something more complex and engaging."

In addition to the usual dock-as-many-as-you-can edict, Sea Captain's order system tracks the number of lines drawn, and calculates the player's score based on those, as well as the number of ships docked.

Still, the number of people who want such a 'complex and engaging evolution' of the genre will be interesting to see. We're guessing it will be rather less than a million.

Sea Captain is out now priced 99c or 59p. Hit the Buy It! button to go directly to sea.
