Retro adventure Golvellius: Valley of Doom coming to the iPhone

Sega's answer to Zelda becomes Apple's answer to the DS?

Retro adventure Golvellius: Valley of Doom coming to the iPhone

Despite being a hopelessly addicted retro gamer, I must confess to having never heard of Golvellius: Valley of Doom, which was originally pegged as the Sega Master System's answer to Nintendo's Legend of Zelda.

That said, a bit of cursory research shows this was initially quite a runaway success in Japan on the MSX range of computers back in 1988.

Anyway, regardless of its 20th Century origins, it's now coming to the iPhone courtesy of mobile developer DotEmu (which has already paddled in the retro iPhone waters with an adaptation of Nicky Boom).

"Golvellius is a wonderful addition to our license portfolio and we are pleased to bring Golvellius to the iPhone and iPod touch for a great retrogaming experience," says Xavier Liard, co-founder and CEO of DotEmu.

Judging by the screenshots provided, this is going to be a pixel perfect rendition of the classic adventure, which puts you in the warrior's boots of Kelesis as he embarks on a quest to defeat the evil king Golvellius and rescue the beautiful Princess Rena while slaying enemies, collecting gold, upgrading weapons and all that J-pop jazz of yesteryear.

Golvellius: Valley of Doom is slated for a worldwide release in August, so get your retro gaming fingers at the ready.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
