LucasArts has released The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition for iPhone and iPod touch. It's on the App Store now for £4.99.

The game puts you (back) in the shoes of Guybrush Threepwood, who wants to become the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean.

It's a "reimagining", although there is some new stuff. A touchscreen interface, obviously, but also updated artwork, a voiceover by members of the original game's audio cast, and a remastered musical score (with "live instruments").

Oh, there's also something called "scene-for-scene hot swap, which lets you switch between the Special Edition and Classic modes whenever you like.

People still get teary-eyed over The Secret of Monkey Island, so the iPhone version looks likely to become a hit. It also raises the possibility of LucasArts bringing some of its other graphical adventures to the App Store.
