In a bid to sate the rabid fans of Polyphony’s Gran Turisimo racing series, who’ve been promised a portable version of the game since the PSP was first released, US producers Chris Hinojosa Miranda and Taku Imasaki have been answering selected fan questions over on the PlayStation blog.

A fair few of the answers can effectively be summed up as “no comment,” but there are a few interesting tidbits to be gleaned from the piece.

For one thing, there’ll be a meaty selection of some 800 cars on offer, which would stand as the biggest roster in a Gran Turismo game yet. It dwarfs the first game on PS1, which had 178 cars, and even the last full edition on PS2, GT4, 'only' had around 700. Considering this is all on a compact UMD, that’s some feat.

With this in mind, Sony understandably feels that additional downloadable cars will be unnecessary. “With that sort of breadth and reach of options, having DLC would be like tossing water into the ocean,” said the producers.

The other issue that GT detractors often bring up is the lack of any sort of damage modelling, with collisions ending in a dull thud rather than a shower of sparks and metal.

Alas, it seems that such an addition won’t be forthcoming in GT PSP: “Damage? No. 800+ cars, 35 tracks, on-the-go awesomeness, and a lifetime’s worth of racing, yes.” Was all the producers had to say on that one.

Still, the fact that GT PSP could end up being the definitive traditional GT experience (the upcoming GT5 on PS3 should see the major advancements) is surely more than any fan of the series could have expected.
