Windows Marketplace for Mobile opening for submissions

Developers invited to send in their software to WinMo app store

Microsoft announced its Windows Mobile rival to the iPhone's App Store, Windows Marketplace, earlier in the year, which it intends to use to serve the huge number of WinMo compatible phones with software and games.

Senior director for mobile platform services product management at Microsoft Todd Brix has announced through the Windows Mobile blog that the service is scheduled to open for submissions on July 27th.

Developers from 29 different countries will all be able to submit their applications ready for the system's launch from this date, with details of a 'developer contest' also to be revealed on the 27th.

The Marketplace isn't due to actually launch until the Autumn, when it'll become available to devices sporting version 6.5 of the Windows Mobile operating system, and toward the end of the year for older handsets.
