Will he still be running round those loops now he's old enough to drink?

Sonic The Hedgehog is 18-years-old tomorrow

As awesome as it is that Sega's mascot is celebrating his 18th birthday tomorrow, it's also kind of depressing to think that I already owned a Mega Drive when he first ran onto our screens. I wonder how old that makes me?

Well, before I resort to breaking out a scientific calculator, we'll put the spotlight back on Sonic. His recent iPhone debut wasn't as attention grabbing as we could have hoped, though it seems very fitting that he'd go full circle with a new version of his original game on the hottest platform of the moment, just before he comes of age.

Perhaps a better celebration is his mobile adaptation of the console game Sonic Unleashed, which actually presented the best interpretation of the high-speed spiky antics as we've seen in a long time.

As chance would have it, Damien recently took a good long look at Sonic's illustrious handheld career, so raise a glass to one of the most influential gaming mascots of all time and check out parts one and two of Pocket Gamer's Portable Pedigree: The handheld history of Sonic The Hedgehog.

Congratulations, old boy!

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
