We’ve always thought of fire fighting as being largely a physical vocation, a brutal war of attrition between combustible materials and men with large hoses. It might require considerable bravery, high levels of physical fitness and even a healthy dose of know-how to get the job done, but you hardly need to be a Mensa candidate in order to succeed at the role.

Go! Go! Rescue Squad from Connect2Media says differently. Taking control of a crack team of firefighters, you’ll need to employ every ounce of grey matter in your head if you’re to rescue every last ‘Darwin’ (that’s ‘person in need of rescuing’ to you and us) from each of the 64 stages.

These Darwins approach their imperilled situation in several different ways. Some stick passively to their positions, waiting to be rescued from the clumps of fire that block their exit route. Others run around in a panicked state, throwing themselves to their death if you’re not careful. Still others take a more proactive approach, and will put out the fires themselves if you lob them an extinguisher.

It’s this ‘lobbing’ mechanic that’s at the heart of Go! Go! Rescue Squad. Whether you’re picking up a fire hydrant or a trapped Darwin, each level comes down to careful positioning followed by a series of accurate tosses, making sure that one of your co-workers is there to catch any Darwins thrown over a great distance.

As our Gold Award review will tell you, we think rather highly of Go! Go! Rescue Squad, with its unique mixture of intuitive gameplay and fiendish puzzles, all set off with some charmingly stylised presentation.

If you’ve been saving yourself for this year’s freshest mobile puzzler, the wait is up. You'll be in safe hands with Go! Go! Rescue Squad.
