Industry analyst Juniper Research has released a new report predicting that by 2014, we'll be spending a whopping $25 billion on mobile applications.

$25 billion!

That's not just on iPhone, obviously: Juniper reckons this growth will come from everyone and their aunt launching an app store, including handset firms and mobile operators.

The company also predicts that games will remain the biggest app category in the next five years, building on the success seen so far on iPhone.

However, Juniper reckons the way we pay for applications will change, with one-off download fees overtaken by in-app payments - micro-transactions and subscriptions for example - by 2011.

Is that big $25 billion figure correct? Let's be honest: by 2014 we'll have forgotten the prediction, in favour of trying to guess how much apps will be worth in 2019.

Even so, mobile games firms looking for a confidence boost should probably pin Juniper's figure up on the wall (and, obviously, wave it at their investors).
