A new sci-fi thriller is gearing up for its box office release called Pandorum, in which two crew members wake up on an abandoned spacecraft with no idea who they are, how long they’ve been there or what their mission is.

Amnesia-fying your main characters is generally too cheesy a cliché to effectively pull off a Hollywood movie these days, but it does remain a reasonably efficient gaming tool – especially on the mobile platform where cramming a storyline into a game is pretty tough.

And that’s precisely where Pandorum is going, courtesy of Artificial Life and Starz Media; the gaming branch of the film studio (Overture) behind the movie (which, fact fans, also owns Manga Entertainment, giving you some idea of the parent company’s awesome remit).

“Starz Digital Media is delighted to enter the mobile gaming space by leveraging this strong property from our feature film division,” said Marc DeBevoise, senior veep of digital media at Starz Media. “The mobile gaming category has recently exploded with cutting edge devices and technologies. We are in a strong position to extend our properties onto these platforms and use the games symbiotically – with opportunities to both generate and receive marketing benefits as the programming and games reach the marketplace.”

The intention for Pandorum is to leverage the technology of the new strain of touchscreen and motion sensitive handsets, which suggests we could well be seeing adaptations for a wide range of pocket gaming platforms.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
